Driver deals in 2026, and the January bargain that never came

For twenty years the rule was simple. Wait for the new driver to arrive in January, then buy last year's model for a third less. Four of the six big brands have now moved to a two-year cycle and that rule has quietly stopped working. Here is where the discounts have gone instead.

Gear tip

The two hundred dollar gap is the shaft, not the head

A Titleist GTS2 is listed anywhere between $699 and $899. That is the same driver head every time. What changes is the shaft screwed into it, and unless a fitting has told you that you need the expensive one, you do not need the expensive one.

This catches people out constantly. They see the higher number online, assume it is a better club, and pay two hundred dollars for a shaft chosen at random.

Loft matters more than the model name

Most club golfers play a driver with too little loft because more loft feels like an admission of something. It is not. If your drives are falling out of the sky rather than carrying, going from 9 degrees to 10.5 will do more for you than any new model released this decade.

A fitting costs somewhere around a hundred dollars and is usually refunded against a purchase. It is the best money in golf and almost nobody spends it.

Deal roundup

What is actually reduced right now

Callaway and Cobra are the only two large brands still launching a new driver every single year. That makes them the only two whose current models are reliably discounted twelve months from now. If you want to buy new and sell the habit of upgrading, buy into an annual cycle and let the calendar do the work.

Everyone else has stretched to two years. Ping, Srixon, Titleist and now TaylorMade all sit on longer cycles, which is good news if you keep a driver for five years and bad news if you were waiting for the annual clear-out.

What the discounts are actually worth

  • Across a full sale period the average reduction lands near 50 per cent, but that average is doing a lot of work.
  • The models people actually want come down 20 to 30 per cent and no further.
  • The genuine 70 per cent reductions are on clubs nobody ordered, in lofts and flexes nobody wanted.
  • Buying last season's model pre-owned from a graded seller stacks a further saving on top, and a driver head does not wear out.

Black Friday remains the deepest week of the year. Many retailers now begin in early November rather than waiting for the day itself.

What we would actually buy

Three drivers worth the money as things stand, for three different reasons. Check the current price before you buy anything, because the figures here move.

  • TaylorMade

    Qi4D Max

    About $650

Forgiveness sits near the 10,000 MOI mark, which in plain terms means off-centre hits lose less than they used to. The reason it leads this page: TaylorMade has said it is keeping Qi4D in the line through 2027 rather than replacing it next spring, so you are not buying something that gets marked down in four months.

  • Ping

    G440 K

    $650 to $705

Also at the 10,000 MOI mark, but with a 32 gram weight at the back you can move between draw, neutral and fade, plus a hosel that adjusts a degree and a half either way. If your miss changes from season to season, this is the one that can follow you.

  • Cobra

    OPTM Max-K

    About $600

The least expensive of the 2026 flagships by a clear fifty dollars. Cobra went after twisting on off-centre hits through head shape and internal weighting rather than chasing a headline forgiveness number, and the result holds its own against drivers costing a hundred more.
